Open source licenses

This site is built with open source software. Most of it is under permissive licenses (MIT, Apache 2.0, BSD) that ask only for attribution. One component carries obligations worth spelling out.

libheif

When you send us photos from an iPhone, they are often HEIC files. Most browsers cannot open that format, so we load libheif in your browser and convert the photo to a JPEG. Without it, those photos could not be sent at all from a Windows or Android device.

libheif is licensed under the GNU Lesser General Public License, version 3. We use it unmodified, as version 1.19.8, by way of the libheif-js package. Its complete source is available at both of those links. It is loaded as a separate module rather than compiled into our own code, so it can be swapped for a different build of the library. If you would like the exact build we serve, or the corresponding source, email us and we will send it.

The conversion happens entirely in your browser. The photo is only sent to us if you go on to submit the form.
