Nobody gets to tell you your style is out

Illustration of a kitchen with natural stone countertops

We measure a lot of kitchens. We hear a lot of homeowners apologize before we even get the tape out. "I know gray is over." "I know everyone's doing white now." "I know this is dated." I want to say something plain about that, because I hear it every week and it bothers me every time.

Who decided your kitchen has a shelf life

Somewhere along the way, interior design turned into a fashion cycle, and fashion cycles need you to feel behind so you'll buy the next thing. That works fine for clothes you wear for a season. It doesn't work for a kitchen you're going to cook in, raise kids in, and sit at the counter doing homework in for the next 20 years.

Nobody living in your house gets a vote from an Instagram account. If you love warm gold granite with a lot of movement, that's not a mistake waiting to be corrected. That's your kitchen. If white and gray quartz is what feels clean and calm to you, that's not "safe" or "boring," that's just what you like, and liking something isn't a crime that needs a defense.

The actual toxic part

Here's what gets me. It's not that trends change, trends always change, that's normal. It's the tone people take when they tell you what you already picked is wrong. A homeowner will send us a photo of a granite they've had for 15 years, a granite they picked out themselves, stood in a slab yard and fell in love with, and someone in their life will say "oh, you should really update that, granite's out." As if the stone changed. As if the thing that made them happy on install day stopped being true.

It didn't stop being true. The stone's the same stone. The only thing that changed is some outside voice decided to make them feel behind.

We've watched trends swing through this shop for years. Tuscan gold granite was everywhere, then everyone wanted white marble looks, then it was all about movement and veining, now we're seeing more warm tones and color come back in. If you picked whatever was popular five years ago just because it was popular, you're the one who's stuck chasing a moving target. If you picked what you actually liked, you're not stuck on anything. You just have a kitchen you like.

What actually matters for a Midlands kitchen

I'm not going to pretend none of it matters. Some things matter a lot, they're just not trend questions:

  • How the stone performs. Granite and quartzite handle daily life well and take brief heat better than most surfaces, though we still say use a trivet. Marble etches from lemon juice and vinegar, and it's just how marble behaves, trendy or not. Quartz doesn't need sealing but can scorch from a hot pan. None of that changes based on what's "in."
  • How it fits your actual cabinets, floor, and light. A slab that looks incredible in a showroom can look wrong in your kitchen if the undertones fight your cabinets. It's a matching question, not a trend question.
  • How long you're staying put. If you're planning to sell in two years, sure, think about resale. If this is your house for the next 20, your own enjoyment of it every single morning is worth more than what a buyer three house-sales from now might prefer.

That's the whole list. Color, pattern, era, vibe, none of that belongs on it.

Barn doors, ducks, and the rest of it

I mean this the way I wrote it. If you want barn doors, put up barn doors. If you've got a duck theme in your kitchen that makes you smile every time you walk in, keep your ducks. If you love a busy, layered, collected look instead of a stripped-down minimal one, that's not clutter, that's your house looking like somebody actually lives there and likes it.

The folks who come through our shop happiest are the ones who tune out whatever's supposed to be trending and pick the slab that makes them stop and say "that one." Not the one the algorithm likes. The one that does something for them. We've had people choose a granite with wild movement everyone in their family thought was "too much," and ten years later they still walk their guests over to it to show it off. That's the whole point of picking it yourself.

Come pick what you like

When you come by our shop at 2015 Charleston Hwy in Cayce, we're not going to steer you toward whatever's trending this year. We'll walk the slabs with you and talk about what holds up, what to expect from it day to day, and what it costs to get it in your kitchen. After that, what you choose is yours to love. Love gray if gray makes you happy. Love gold granite with movement if that's what does it for you. There's no wrong answer here, just the one that's right for you.
