Granite countertops for Irmo homes: what to know before you shop

Will granite work with my kitchen?
That's the first question most Irmo homeowners ask us, and the answer is almost always yes. Irmo has a mix of housing stock, from older homes near Lake Murray to newer builds off St. Andrews and Broad River. Granite works across nearly all of it because it comes in so many colors and patterns. A traditional kitchen with painted cabinets can lean into a warm granite with gold and brown flecks. A more updated kitchen with gray or white cabinets often pairs well with a cooler granite that has movement in it, or something calmer with less pattern.
What people actually ask us at the shop
A few questions come up over and over from Irmo customers:
- Will it match my cabinets? Bring a cabinet door sample or a photo. Granite has natural variation, so we look at actual slabs in person rather than guessing from a small sample chip.
- Do I have to seal it? Yes. Granite is porous, so it needs to be sealed, and resealed periodically, usually about once a year for a kitchen that gets regular use. It's not a big job, but it's a real one.
- Can I put a hot pot on it? Granite handles brief contact with heat better than most surfaces, but we still tell everyone to use a trivet or hot pad. No stone is worth risking over a pot roast.
- Will it scratch or stain? Granite resists scratching well, and sealing helps it resist stains too. Still, use a cutting board, and wipe up wine, oil, or citrus spills instead of letting them sit overnight.
Lake house kitchens vs. everyday family kitchens
A lot of our Irmo customers fall into two groups. One is folks near Lake Murray fixing up a second home or a lake house, where the kitchen sees weekend cooking, grilling, and guests. The other is families in neighborhoods like Friarsgate or Amberfield doing a full-time kitchen that gets used every single day. Both groups can use granite well, but the choices sometimes differ. A busier daily kitchen might do better with a granite that has more consistent pattern, so small marks and daily wear don't show as easily. A lake house kitchen has more room to go bold with a dramatic slab since it's not under constant heavy use.
What granite costs, roughly
Pricing depends on the slab you pick and the layout of your kitchen, but as a rough range, granite countertops often run somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 to 100 dollars per square foot installed, including fabrication and our sealing at install. Unusual or premium slabs can run higher. We're happy to give you a real number once we know your layout and the stone you're drawn to.
Come look at slabs in person
Photos and small samples only tell you so much with granite. The pattern and color really come alive under real light on a full slab. If you're in Irmo and thinking about a kitchen project, stop by our shop at 2015 Charleston Hwy in Cayce. We'll walk the yard with you and talk through what actually makes sense for your kitchen and how you use it.
